Nulda Beyers, Ph.D. - ZAMSTAR Principal Investigator
Nulda Beyers is Professor in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Heath, and the Director of the Desmond Tutu TB Centre, Stellenbosch University. She's also Editor-in-Chief (Tuberculosis) of the International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Disease.
Dr. Beyers qualified with MBChB at Stellenbosch University, holds a Fellowship of the College of Physicians of South Africa (FCP SA), obtained a MSc (Med) from University of Cape Town and a PhD from Stellenbosch University. She has received many awards and honours for her research work into tuberculosis, including the vice-chancellor’s award for Excellence in Research, and holds numerous research grants. She has published close on 200 book chapters, supplements and manuscripts, mostly on tuberculosis in journals including New England J Medicine, Lancet and PNAS.
She believes that an essential element of research is empowerment of communities and building capacity in Africa. Therefore she motivates the research team to spend 5% of their time on “non-research” activities (e.g. getting involved with the care of orphans, job creation activities, youth programmes etc.)
