Dr. Cavalcante received her MD degree from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in 1985 and her PhD in Infectious and Parasitary Diseases from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in 2007.

She is currently a physician and researcher for Fundação Oswaldo Cruz. She also coordinates the Tuberculosis Control Program for the Health Secretariat of the City of Rio de Janeiro, and she is an active member of the World Health Organization (WHO)

Dr. Cavalcante's research activities relate to Colective Health, focusing on Epidemiology.
